Description

The Rhyncholaeliocattleya ‘Star of Siam’ (Rlc. ‘Star of Siam’) is a hybrid orchid renowned for its large, fragrant, apricot-colored blooms with a yellow throat. To ensure its health and vibrant flowering, consider the following care guidelines:

Light: Provide bright, indirect sunlight. An east-facing window is ideal, as it offers morning sun without the intensity of afternoon rays. Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves.

Temperature: Maintain daytime temperatures between 70°F and 80°F (20°C to 27°C). Nighttime temperatures should drop to around 60°F to 64°F (15°C to 18°C). This temperature variation helps initiate flower buds and promotes robust growth.

Humidity: Aim for humidity levels between 45% and 60%. To achieve this, consider using a humidity tray or a room humidifier. Ensure the orchid is not sitting in standing water, as this can lead to root rot.

Watering: Water the orchid when the potting medium feels dry almost to the bottom of the pot, typically every week or so. Avoid letting the roots sit in water, as this can lead to root rot. Watering in the morning allows the leaves to dry before nightfall, reducing the risk of bacterial growth.

Fertilization: During the growing season, feed your Rlc. ‘Star of Siam’ regularly with a balanced orchid fertilizer. Reduce feeding during the dormant period. Ensure the fertilizer is diluted to half strength to prevent over-fertilization.

Potting and Repotting: Use a well-draining orchid mix, such as New Zealand sphagnum moss or medium-grade orchid bark. Repot the orchid every 1 to 2 years, preferably in the spring, to refresh the potting medium and provide ample space for root growth. When repotting, choose a pot that is large enough to accommodate 2 or 3 years’ growth.

Pest and Disease Management: Regularly inspect the orchid for pests like scale and thrips. Remove any dry, papery sheaths from the pseudobulbs to eliminate hiding spots for insects. Treat infestations promptly with appropriate methods, such as using neem oil or insecticidal soap.
