Description
Caring for a Phalaenopsis orchid, commonly known as the “moth orchid,” during its “happy hour” (a time when it’s thriving) involves maintaining its ideal conditions. Here’s how you can ensure it stays healthy and continues to bloom beautifully:
1. Light
- Place the orchid in bright, indirect light.
- Avoid direct sunlight, as it can scorch the leaves. A north or east-facing window works well.
- If indoors, supplement with fluorescent or LED grow lights if natural light is insufficient.
2. Watering
- Water once a week, allowing the potting medium to dry slightly between waterings.
- Use room-temperature, filtered, or distilled water to avoid mineral buildup.
- Avoid wetting the leaves and crown to prevent rot.
3. Humidity
- Maintain humidity levels around 50-70%.
- Use a humidity tray or mist the air around the plant (not the plant itself) to increase moisture.
4. Temperature
- Keep temperatures between 65°F (18°C) at night and 75-85°F (24-29°C) during the day.
- Protect the orchid from drafts and sudden temperature changes.
5. Fertilizing
- Use a balanced orchid fertilizer (e.g., 20-20-20) at half-strength every two weeks during the growing season.
- Reduce feeding during winter when growth slows.
6. Potting Medium and Repotting
- Use a well-draining orchid mix, typically bark-based.
- Repot every 1-2 years or when the medium starts breaking down or the roots outgrow the pot.
7. After Bloom Care
- Once flowers fall, cut the flower spike back to the second or third node (if it’s still green) to encourage a secondary bloom. If the spike is brown, trim it to the base.
- Continue regular care to support new growth.
