Description
Phalaenopsis splendid (also known as the “splendid moth orchid”) is a variety of Phalaenopsis orchids, known for its stunning, large flowers. To care for your Phalaenopsis splendid, follow these tips:
Light:
- Bright, indirect light is ideal. Avoid direct sunlight, as it can burn the leaves.
- If the leaves are turning yellow or red, it could be a sign of too much light.
Temperature:
- Daytime temperature: 75-85°F (24-29°C)
- Nighttime temperature: 60-65°F (15-18°C)
- Try to maintain a temperature difference between day and night, as this encourages blooming.
Watering:
- Water the plant once a week or when the top of the soil feels dry to the touch.
- Make sure the pot has good drainage to avoid waterlogging, which can cause root rot.
- Avoid letting the plant sit in standing water.
Humidity:
- Orchids prefer 50-70% humidity. If your home is dry, place the pot on a tray with pebbles and water, ensuring the pot doesn’t sit directly in the water.
- You can also use a humidifier or mist the plant occasionally (without over-wetting the flowers or leaves).
Fertilizing:
- Fertilize with a balanced orchid fertilizer (e.g., 30-10-10) diluted to half strength every 2-4 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer).
- Reduce fertilizing in the fall and winter when the plant is not actively growing.
Repotting:
- Repot the Phalaenopsis splendid every 1-2 years or when the potting medium breaks down. This ensures the roots are not suffocated by compacted medium.
- Use a well-draining orchid mix, typically bark-based.
Blooming:
- After the bloom has finished, cut the spike just above the node (if the spike is still green) to encourage a new flower spike.
- If the spike turns brown, you can cut it back to the base.
