🪴 Handling and Caring for Tolumnia Jairak Firm ‘Crimson’

1. Light ☀️

  • Prefers bright, indirect light (similar to Cattleya orchids).

  • Tolerates some direct morning sun, but avoid harsh midday sun.

  • Insufficient light = no blooms.

2. Temperature 🌡️

  • Intermediate to warm: 20-30°C (68-85°F).

  • Avoid temperatures below 15°C (59°F).

3. Humidity 💧

  • Loves high humidity (50-70%).

  • Use humidity trays or a humidifier in dry environments.

  • Ensure good air circulation to prevent fungal problems.

4. Watering 🚿

  • Unlike most orchids, Tolumnias prefer to dry quickly between waterings.

  • Water 2-3 times a week during active growth.

  • In cooler or dormant periods, reduce to once a week.

  • Mounted plants dry faster and may need more frequent watering.

5. Potting & Medium 🪵

  • Often grown mounted on wood/slabs or in small baskets.

  • Use coarse bark, charcoal, or sphagnum moss sparingly.

  • Ensure excellent drainage—Tolumnia hates soggy roots.

6. Fertilizing 🌿

  • Feed with a balanced orchid fertilizer (20-20-20) at 1/4 to 1/2 strength.

  • Fertilize every 2 weeks during active growth.

  • Flush with plain water once a month to avoid salt buildup.

7. Repotting 🪴

  • Repot every 1-2 years or when the medium breaks down.

  • Best time to repot is after flowering.

8. Pests/Diseases 🐛

  • Watch for scale, mealybugs, and spider mites.

  • Good airflow and proper watering prevent most problems.
