🌿 Tolumnia ‘Golden Sunset’ Orchid

🌼 Description:

Tolumnia ‘Golden Sunset’ is a stunning hybrid orchid known for its vibrant, fiery flowers. The blossoms display a mix of bright yellow, orange, and red hues, resembling a sunset. The flowers are typically small but numerous, forming clusters that create a dazzling display. The plant itself is compact, with fan-shaped leaves and a clumping growth habit, making it perfect for small spaces, mounted displays, or basket culture.

This variety is part of the Oncidiinae alliance (formerly known as Equitant Oncidiums), often called ‘dancing lady orchids’ due to the shape of their flowers.

Handling:

  • Delicate Roots: Tolumnias have fine, wiry roots. Handle them gently when repotting or mounting to avoid damage.

  • Best Grown Mounted or in Small Pots/Baskets: They prefer excellent air circulation around the roots.

  • Avoid Overwatering: Tolumnias are very susceptible to root rot if kept too wet.

🌱 Care Guide:

🌞 Light:

  • Bright, filtered light (similar to Cattleya orchids).

  • A few hours of direct morning sun is beneficial.

  • Leaves should be medium green. Red or purple tinge on leaves indicates high light (which is okay).

💧 Watering:

  • Water thoroughly when the roots are dry.

  • Frequency: 2–3 times per week in warm weather, less in winter.

  • Allow roots to dry quickly between waterings.

  • Mist regularly if humidity is low.

🌡️ Temperature & Humidity:

  • Warm to intermediate temperatures (65–85°F / 18–29°C).

  • Humidity: 50–70% is ideal.

  • Good air movement is important to prevent fungal problems.

🌸 Fertilizer:

  • Use a balanced orchid fertilizer (20-20-20) at 1/4 strength weekly during active growth.

  • Flush with plain water occasionally to prevent salt buildup.

🌿 Repotting/Mounting:

  • Repot or remount every 1–2 years when roots outgrow the mount/pot or medium deteriorates.

  • Best time to repot: Spring or after flowering.

🐛 Pests/Diseases:

  • Watch for scale, mealybugs, and spider mites.

  • Ensure good airflow to prevent fungal spots or rot.
