🌿 Anthurium: Plant Description

Anthurium, commonly known as Flamingo Flower or Laceleaf, is a tropical plant native to Central and South America. It belongs to the Araceae family. The plant is admired for its shiny, heart-shaped leaves and striking wax-like flowers (which are actually colored spathes) with a protruding spadix in the center. Anthuriums come in shades of red, pink, white, purple, green, and even multi-colored varieties.

They are widely used as indoor ornamental plants and as cut flowers in floral arrangements due to their long-lasting blooms and exotic appearance.

🪴 Anthurium Care Tips (Potted Plants)

Light:

  • Prefers bright, indirect light.

  • Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves.

  • Tolerates lower light but may produce fewer flowers.

Watering:

  • Keep the soil slightly moist, but not soggy.

  • Water when the top inch of soil feels dry.

  • Reduce watering in winter.

  • Ensure the pot has good drainage.

Humidity:

  • Thrives in high humidity (60-80%).

  • Mist regularly or use a humidifier in dry environments.

Temperature:

  • Optimal range: 65-80°F (18-27°C).

  • Protect from drafts and sudden temperature changes.

Soil:

  • Use a well-draining, light, and airy soil mix (orchid mix, peat moss, and perlite blend).

Fertilizer:

  • Feed with a balanced, liquid houseplant fertilizer every 6-8 weeks during growing season (spring-summer).

✂️ Handling Tips (Cut Flowers & Arrangements)

Cutting & Conditioning:

  • Cut Anthurium stems at a sharp angle with a clean knife.

  • Submerge in fresh, clean water immediately.

  • Re-cut stems every few days for better water uptake.

Vase Water:

  • Use clean water with floral preservatives.

  • Change water every 2-3 days.

Storage:

  • Store cut Anthuriums at 55-65°F (13-18°C).

  • Avoid cold storage below 50°F (10°C) to prevent cold damage.

Longevity:

  • Properly cared-for Anthurium cut flowers can last 2-3 weeks in a vase.

Handling:

  • Handle spathes gently to avoid bruising or blemishes, as their surfaces are delicate.

  • Wear gloves if sensitive to plant sap, which may cause mild skin irritation.
